Here are some answers to the most common questions we've seen posted since the launch of our forums. We'll continue to update this page as more questions arise.

Hours of Operation

The intent is for the forums (and this site) to be open round the clock. This site is under development by the very ideas it is promoting, so it is safe to say we're still working out a few things. This sometimes means that the site has to be taken down for short periods, or that sometimes an area may be offline or in 'read-only' mode. We will eventually get to the place where they are open 24/7.

Is this the an open community?

Yes, these forums are meant to to be a community open to developers of all levels and needs. We subscribe to the idea that there is no One Grand Way to solve all software development problems. But there are good ideas, good technologies and what can be considered best practices. So there is a plan to help foster an open community of developers who are out to share ideas and consult openly on their experience.

Sigs, icons and skins…

We have community-driven items such as signatures, special ranks and more is in the works. You can participate in the design and features through these forums. We welcome your suggestions and feedback.

Signatures – Sigs are a part of our forums.

  • Icons – we will likely introduce some icons in the near future
  • Skins – there is just 1 forum skin available

Our forums are still brand new, and the user ranks are based mostly on quantities (such as how many times you log in, how many posts you make, etc.). However, this site is going to be the baseline model for a couple of other sites which we will be announcing shortly. Those sites will need even more enhanced ranks and user community features. So we intend to develop a majority of the features here. We're watching all the great answers people are posting here and eventually we're likely to create more types of ranks, but until then here's the scoop.

User ranks in NOD Software's forums:

  • Authenticated – first log in after email confirmation
  • Writer – Authenticated member who requests permission to add content (Blogs, Wiki, Books, etc.)
  • Contributor –>50 content posts
  • Staff Member – special ranking granted at any point
  • Moderator – special ranking granted at any point

Locking threads

Moderators or Staff Members will lock threads based on need.

Deleting threads

To keep the boards as clutter-free as we can, Moderators or Staff Members may remove some of the duplicate threads. If you see your post count go down, don't worry, we're monitoring quality more than quantity and the ranks aren't likely to change anytime soon. Chat threads without substantive quality or that are not related to the site's purpose will be deleted.

Editing messages

1. You cannot edit anyone else's messages.
2. You can edit your own messages. (Working on a way to time limit this ability.)
3. Moderators and Staff Members can edit messages (but will normally opt for deletion over editing).

That said it is very confusing when the original message no longer matches the replies to that question. For this reason, editing messages should be very limited.
